So last Monday, when David suddenly said, “I think we should switch sides,” I laughed.

“What?” he finally asked.

“You’re staring at me.”
“I’m eating breakfast.”
“You’ve been holding the same spoon for 30 seconds.”
I looked down.
He was right.
That only irritated me more.
The next evening, I finally confronted him about it.
“Enough. Why did you make us switch sides?”
“I already told you.”
“No. You gave me an excuse.”
He sighed.
“You’ve slept on the same side for 17 years. Now you suddenly need mine. You keep checking whether I’m asleep. You watch me every time I get out of bed. And last night you went outside at three in the morning.”
David went quiet.
“Is there something you’re not telling me?”
“Yes,” he said.
My heart skipped a beat. I asked, “What?”
“Just stay here,” he said.
“David—”
“Two seconds.”
He walked out of the living room.
I heard him go toward the back of the house. A door opened. Then another.
For maybe 30 seconds, I just stood there staring at the hallway, imagining every ridiculous possibility my brain could produce.
Then David came back.
And when I saw what he was carrying in his hands, I finally understood why he had switched sides of the bed.
It was tiny. Wrapped in one of our old dish towels.
At first, all I saw was a little gray head and two enormous ears.

“Five what?”
“Kittens.”
I actually laughed. Not because it was funny.

“You switched sides of the bed because there are kittens outside?”
He made a face.
“That was part of it.”
I looked at him.

“Can I explain before you decide I’ve lost my mind?”
“I’m listening.”
He carried the kitten into the kitchen. She looked exhausted.
“Is she okay?” I asked.
“I think she got cold. The others were huddled together, but she was off to the side.”
“Where are they?”
“Under the bushes below our bedroom window.”
“Your side?” I asked.
“My old side.”
Then it clicked.
“You heard them, and you didn’t tell me?” I asked.
“The first night,” David said. “I was about to tell you.”
“Why would switching sides help anything?”
He looked embarrassed.
That was when I realized there was more to the plan.
I waited for him to speak up.
“I wanted you to hear them.”

“What?”
“I figured if you slept beside the window, you’d hear the crying.”

“You’d investigate.”
“You moved me to the window so I would accidentally discover kittens?”
“That was the idea.”
“That is possibly the strangest plan you’ve had in 17 years.”
“I’ve had worse.”
“Name one.”
He thought for a second.
“Buying that pressure washer,” he said while looking at me.
“Fair.”
I looked at the kitten again.
“But I didn’t hear anything.”
“I know.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Why not?”
“Because every time they started making noise, I woke up first.”
I stared at him.
He continued. “And then I’d worry that something was wrong.”
I stared at him for another second.
Then I started laughing.
David looked offended.
“I was trying to do something nice.”
“You made me think you were hiding something.”
“I was.”
“Five kittens!”
“Again, technically.”
I shook my head. Then the little kitten squeaked again.
My laughter stopped.
“Should we be doing something?”
“I already called someone.”
“Who?”
“A rescue.”
He told me he’d spoken with them that afternoon.
They’d advised him not to move the whole litter if the mother was still returning. Apparently, she had been, though not consistently.
David had been checking from a distance and making sure the area remained quiet.
Tonight, however, the smallest kitten had wandered away from the others.
It felt cold when he touched her.
“The rescue told me what to watch for,” he said. “They said if one seemed weak or separated, call again.”
“Did you?”
“Yes. They’re sending someone in the morning.”
I looked toward the back door. “I want to see the others.”
“I knew this would happen.”
“What?”
“The second you found out, I’d lose control of the situation.”
“You never had control of this situation,” I said.
“That’s probably true.”
We went outside.
David led me around the side of the house.
Beneath the bedroom window, behind a row of hydrangeas, he’d made a little shelter from a plastic storage bin turned on its side.
Inside were four tiny bodies curled together.
One black. One orange. Two gray.
I crouched and said, “Oh, David.”
“I know.”
One of them lifted its head, then immediately buried its face.
I lowered my voice without even meaning to.
“You’ve been checking on them for three nights?”
“Four.”
I turned.
“Four?”
“I found them Sunday.”
“And you suggested switching sides on Monday.”
“Yes.”
“This was premeditated,” I said. “You knew exactly what you were doing.”
“Yeah.”
I shined the flashlight toward the shelter. Then I noticed a bowl nearby.
“You’ve been feeding the mother?”
“A little.”
“Water too?”
“Yes.”
“And you made this shelter?”
“It rained Tuesday.”
“You’ve been running a secret cat hotel under our bedroom window.”
“It sounds worse when you say it like that.”
“It sounds adorable.”
He smiled.

“You were sneaking outside at three in the morning.”
“At three in the morning? Under our hydrangeas?”
“I didn’t know where you were going!”
“Who would I be meeting behind the hydrangeas?”
“I hadn’t gotten that far.”
He laughed so hard he had to cover his mouth.
We went back inside.
The smallest kitten was asleep in the box.
I sat beside her on the kitchen floor while David brought me tea.

David sat beside me.

She ignored me.

After everything settled, David stood in our bedroom one evening.

We moved everything back.
